The factory style head gaskets for the 301 had many of the coolant passages blocked off between the cylinder head and block. I assume this was done for emissions and fuel economy purposes as a hotter combustion chamber allows for more burning of emission gasses and a leaner fuel mixture.
Unfortunately, this additional heat does not work well in a turbo application. Especially one with out intercooling capabilities.
Unfortunately at this time, it looks like Fel Pro is not offering the 301 head gasket anymore. Not sure if and when it will be available again.
In the mean time, we designed our own custom head gasket to be produced. It features additional coolant holes that will keep the combustion chambers a little cooler to help avoid detonation. Our gaskets have been dyno tested up to 14 psi of boost on a stock 301.
